Gas Cooker Installations & Repairs
A gas cooker has to be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer — it is not a job for a general handyman or a delivery crew. Better Gas install, move and repair gas cookers, hobs and range cookers across London, and every appliance we leave behind has been tested and signed off.
We fit freestanding cookers, built-in ovens, gas hobs and large range cookers. That includes running or altering the pipework, fitting the correct bayonet or rigid connection, securing the stability bracket or restraint chain, and checking the room has the ventilation the appliance needs.
If your cooker is already in place and playing up, we repair it. Common faults we see are burners that will not light or keep going out, a yellow or lazy flame instead of a crisp blue one, a grill or oven that heats unevenly, ignition that clicks but does not catch, a failed thermocouple or flame supervision device, and the smell of gas around the connection point.
A yellow flame, sooty marks or a smell of gas means stop using the appliance and call us. If you can smell gas right now, turn the supply off at the meter, open the windows and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.
What a cooker installation includes
1. Isolating the supply and disconnecting the old appliance safely, including capping off if you are not replacing it straight away.
2. Checking the existing pipework is the right size for the new appliance and upgrading it if it is not.
3. Fitting the correct connection — a bayonet fitting and flexible hose for a freestanding cooker, a rigid connection for a hob or built-in oven.
4. Fitting the stability bracket or restraint chain that a freestanding cooker is required to have.
5. Checking ventilation and, where the appliance needs it, the flue.
6. A tightness test on the installation, a working pressure and gas rate check, and a burner, oven, grill and ignition test.
7. Taking the packaging and the old appliance out of your way, and talking you through how the new one works before we leave.
We work in homes, flats, rental properties and commercial kitchens, and we carry the common hoses, bayonets and fittings on the van so most jobs are finished in one visit.
Range Cookers, Commercial Kitchens And LPG
Not every cooker job is a straight swap. A range cooker is heavy, usually wants a larger gas supply than the pipe already feeding the kitchen, and has to be restrained properly once it is in.
Commercial kitchens are a different discipline again. Catering appliances sit under a separate Gas Safe category, they need an interlocked ventilation system that shuts the gas off if the extraction stops, and the certificate an environmental health officer asks to see is a CP42, not a domestic record. Better Gas hold the domestic and the commercial catering qualifications, so a restaurant, a pub kitchen or a care home can be looked after by the same firm that services the flats above it.
Properties off the mains are covered too. An LPG cooker needs different injectors and runs at a different pressure, and an appliance moved from natural gas to LPG without changing the injectors is dangerous, not just inefficient.
