Boilers get serviced every year. Cookers and gas fires almost never do — and they are the two appliances that sit in the rooms people actually live in. A service is not a quick look. We strip the appliance down as far as the manufacturer intends, clean the burners, injectors and pilot assembly, check the seals and the safety devices, measure the operating pressure and the gas rate against the data plate, and test that the appliance is venting the way it should.

What is checked on a service
1. A visual inspection of the appliance, its connection and its pipework, and a tightness test on the installation.
2. Burners, injectors, the pilot assembly and the ignition cleaned and re-tested.
3. Working pressure and gas rate measured and compared with the manufacturer’s data plate.
4. Flame picture checked — a crisp blue flame, not a yellow or lifting one.
5. Safety devices tested: the flame supervision device, the thermocouple, and on fires the oxygen depletion sensor.
6. Seals, door glass, radiants and coals checked and reported on, and replaced where they are worn.
7. On flued appliances, a flue flow and spillage test with the appliance running.
8. Ventilation and appliance stability checked — including the restraint chain or bracket on a freestanding cooker.
9. A written record of what was tested, what was found and anything that needs attention.
